Reptile nuisance
Reptiles are an integral part of our natural environment. The presence of snakes and other reptiles are an indicator of a healthy environment.
If you encounter a snake outdoors, leave it alone and it will go on its way. If it stays around, it is because it has found a source of food. Snakes eat mice, rats, baby birds, and eggs.
If you find a snake indoors: use a long handled broom to sweep the snake into a large garbage can with a lid. Carry the garbage can to the edge of your property and let it go. Keep children and pets away while you are trying to move the snake.
Techniques to discourage exclude snakes from your home
Remove woodpiles, high grass, heavy use of mulch, and junk from near your home.
Do not leave pet food or store birdseed outside, this attracts rodents, and thus predators of rodents.
Make sure garbage cans have tight fitting lids.
Check outside around water pipes, doors and windows, and electrical service entrances for small openings. Have a professional seal off these openings with the proper material.
